PROHIBITION SIGNS

Prohibition signs are regulatory signs that PROHIBIT (forbid) certain actions by drivers or pedestrians and MUST be obeyed.  It is an offence to disobey any prohibition sign.  Prohibition signs are usually mounted on poles or structures next to the roadway.

Prohibition signs tell you:

  • what actions you MAY NOT take, by indication of a limitation (applicable to all road users), e.g. exceeding a speed limit, etc.
  • which road or part of the road you MAY NOT use (applicable to a specific type of vehicle or road user, indicated by a symbol on the sign).

Where no vehicle type or road user is displayed, the sign would be a limitation, generally applicable to all.

EXAMPLE: temporary version of prohibition sign.

When an image of a specific type of vehicle or road user is displayed on a prohibition sign, it would mean that the sign is no longer generally applicable but specifically applicable to such type of vehicle, pedestrians, bicycles, etc.  The command would be that the type of vehicle or road user, displayed on such sign, MUST NOT use that part of the road.  Any other type of vehicle or road user MAY use that part of the road.

Shape:  Round.

Colours:  White sign boards with red borders and black symbols or writing on the sign.  Some prohibition signs will be crossed through with a red line, while others won't.

All prohibition signs have a temporary version with a yellow background and red border.  Temporary prohibition signs would be displayed where circumstances on the road have changed temporarily and have equal importance to that of the standard versions of prohibition signs.
