COMMAND SIGNS

Command signs are regulatory signs that give drivers and other road users certain COMMANDS which they MUST obey.  It is an offence to disobey any command sign.  Command signs are usually mounted on poles or structures next to the roadway.

Command signs tell you:

  • what actions you MUST take (applicable to all road users)
  • which road or part of the road you MUST use (applicable to specific road users, indicated by a symbol on the sign)

EXAMPLE: Temporary version of command sign

When the image of a specific type of vehicle or road user is displayed on a command sign, it would mean that the sign is no longer generally applicable but specifically applicable to such type of vehicle, pedestrians, bicycles, etc.  The command would be that the type of vehicle or road user, displayed on such sign, MUST use that part of the road only.  Any other road users MAY NOT use that part of the road.

Colour:  Blue sign board with white borders and white symbols or writing on the sign.

Shape:  Round.

All command signs have a temporary version with a yellow background and black border.  Temporary command signs would be displayed where circumstances on the road have changed temporarily and have equal importance to that of the standard versions of command signs.
