SOUTH AFRICAN ROAD TRAFFIC SIGNS

NOTE:  This page and sub-pages are currently

under construction and will be available soon!

Road Traffic Signs are divided into:

  • road signs,
  • road markings,
  • traffic signals

ROAD SIGNS

Regulatory signs regulate and control the actions of road users.  They prohibit or command road users to perform certain actions. Failure to obey these signs is an offence and is punishable by a fine or imprisonment or both.  Regulatory signs are divided into 7 sub-groups.

Click on the links below to be directed to each page.

Warning signs alert road users in time to dangerous conditions on or next to the road or of any changes in the layout of the road ahead.  Warning signs are divided into 4 groups, being Road Layout Signs, Direction Of Movement Signs, Symbolic Signs and Hazard Marker Signs.  We will cover them all on 1 page.

Guidance signs are an aid to the road user. If the message is short, these rectangular signs are small. However, these signs used for guidance or directing as well as those, which are fairly complicated, are relatively big.  Guidance signs are divided into 8 groups.

Click on the links below to be directed to each page.

  • Location Signs
  • Route Markers
  • Direction Signs (ordinary, freeway, crossroad, overhead, toll)
  • Tourism Direction Signs
  • Local Direction Signs
  • Direction Sign Symbols
  • Diagrammatic Signs
  • Variable Message Signs

Information signs supply general information to the road user.  Information signs can also be used along with another road sign to provide additional information to the primary road sign displayed.

Click on the link below to be directed to information signs.

All of the above-mentioned road signs (excluding road markings) could be used in combination to form combination signs.

Click on the link below to be directed to combination signs.

  • Combination Signs

All of the above-mentioned road signs (excluding traffic signals and road markings) have a temporary version of such road sign as well.  A temporary road sign would be displayed when conditions on or next to the road has changed temporarily.  These temporary road signs have yellow backgrounds.  The message of temporary signs is that normal standards are not applicable and that, as a result, more attention must be given to the specific circumstances.  Temporary versions of road signs have the exact same criteria as the primary version thereof.

There are, however, some temporary road signs that do not have a permanent version e.g. at roadworks, maintenance, construction, an accident scene, a police blockade, etc.
